Start a conversation#

Go to Messages. Select New discussion to start a group discussion around a topic and, optionally, one of your rabbit holes, and choose who can join. To talk with one person, open Messages from their profile, or send them a rabbit hole with Share.

To add people to a group discussion you're in, open Details (the people icon at the top) and select Add people. They're told you added them. Someone isn't added if they only hear from people they follow and don't follow you (see Who can contact you), if they left that discussion, or if they were removed from it and you aren't the one looking after it. One-to-one conversations stay between the two of you.

Or, in Add people, select Copy link under Invite with a link. Anyone with the link can join for 7 days, up to 25 people, making an account first if they need one. Someone who left can come back by it, but never someone who was removed. Select Turn off to stop it.

A conversation can also build a rabbit hole: select + next to the message box, then Start a rabbit hole together. See Go down one together.

Who can join#

A group discussion's Who can join is either Anyone or Only people added. One you start with New discussion begins as Only people added; change it there before you select Create. One started from a topic's page (Start a discussion) or from a rabbit hole's topic (Discuss this) is open to anyone.

Anyone signed in can read a discussion that's open to anyone without joining it, so keep what you'd rather not share to discussions only people added can join, or to one-to-one conversations. People who aren't signed in never see discussions.

Whoever looks after a discussion can change who can join at any time in Details. Closing it to Only people added doesn't take anyone out.

Look after a discussion#

Whoever started a group discussion looks after it. If they leave, whoever has been in it longest takes over. Details shows who that is: Started this discussion, or Looks after this discussion. Whoever looks after it can:

  • Change who can join, in Details.
  • Turn off invite links: Details shows how many are open, with Turn off.
  • Remove someone: in Details, select Remove next to them, and confirm. They're taken out of the discussion and aren't told. They can't join it again, by an invite link either, and nobody else can add them back; you can, by adding them yourself.
  • Remove a message: press and hold someone's message (or right-click it on a computer), choose Remove, and confirm. It's removed for everyone and can't be brought back. They aren't told.

In a one-to-one conversation, you can't remove the other person or their messages: block them instead. To step away from a discussion yourself, open Details and select Leave discussion.

If someone breaks the Community Guidelines, report them or what they sent as well. We can remove people and messages from any discussion, close one so nobody new can join or be added, or delete it.

Notifications and muting#

With pushes on, new messages in a conversation come as one push while it's unread, at most once an hour, and in the email when you've been away; never what was said. In a discussion anyone can join, you hear about them if you look after it, follow whoever wrote, or have written there yourself. Reading the conversation, on any device, stops them. A rabbit hole someone sends or passes to you in a one-to-one conversation comes as its own push.

To stop a conversation's badge, pushes, and emails, press and hold it in Messages (or right-click it on a computer) and choose Mute. Mentions still come through, and in a one-to-one conversation so do rabbit holes sent or passed to you. Choose Unmute to hear from it again.

React and reply#

  • React: press and hold a message (or right-click it on a computer) and choose Heart, Thumbs up, Thumbs down, Ha ha, Exclamation marks, Question mark, or any emoji. Choose the same one again to take it back.
  • Reply: choose Reply to answer a specific message. On a trackpad or touchscreen, swipe the message to reply.
  • Copy or Save a message's text or attachments from the same menu.

Photos, videos, files, and voice#

  • Select + in the message bar to add Photos & Videos, a File, or a rabbit hole. You can also drag files into the conversation.
  • Record a voice message with the microphone button.
  • Up to 10 attachments per message, and up to 50 MB each. Large photos are resized.
  • Links you send get a preview card. Its picture loads through White Rabbit, so the site it's from doesn't see who's looking.

Boards in a chat#

A conversation can have boards: open canvases for planning, sketching, or collecting links together, with the same tools as a rabbit hole's board. Select Boards (the board icon at the top of the conversation) to see them.

  • Make one with New board and give it a title. To start from Trails or other boards, choose Start from…, find one or more, and choose Link (a live card of it) or Copy (its items, yours to change) for each, up to 8. A conversation can have up to 50. Free accounts can make up to 15 boards in chats (boards you made in chats you've left don't count); Plus has no limit.
  • Everyone in the conversation edits its boards together and sees each other's cursors. Select ⋯ on a board to open or rename it.
  • Tap Ask Rabbit (or press /) and type or speak: sort notes into themes, tidy up, make a mind map or timeline, connect pages, or ask about the board. One Undo takes back its changes to the board. Ask Rabbit is part of Plus.
  • Delete a board if you made it or the conversation. It's deleted for everyone, and taken off the feed if it's posted.
  • Post a board from its page to put it on the feed and on the profile of everyone in the conversation, with a caption if you like. Choose who can see it: Public, Followers (people who follow you), Close friends (your close friends list), or Just this chat. Everyone who can see the post sees who's in the conversation, and can open the board to watch it change. Only the conversation can edit it.
  • Unpost takes it off the feed and the profiles. The board stays. To change who can see a post, unpost it and post it again.
  • Join or Ask to join shows on a group conversation's posted board to people who aren't in the conversation: Join when anyone can join it, Ask to join when only people added can. Whoever looks after the discussion is told about an ask, and anyone in it can let them in from Details. Once they're in, they see everything said in it, from the start, and its boards.

Messages and safety#

Messages never contain ads and are never used to choose ads or to shape your feed. A one-to-one conversation, or a discussion only people added can join, can be read only by the people in it. A discussion open to anyone can be read by anyone signed in.

  • Report: choose it in the menu on a message or conversation that breaks the Community Guidelines. We'll take a look, and nobody is told who reported it.
  • Block: choose it in the menu on your conversation with someone, one of their messages, or their name. They can't message you or add you to conversations, and their messages in groups you share are hidden for you.
  • Remove: in a discussion you look after, take someone out or remove their message. See Look after a discussion.
  • Who can contact you: in Settings → Privacy, choose People I follow so only they can start conversations with you, add you to groups, or ask to join a rabbit hole you started or a chat you run.

See Blocking, reporting, and limits.
