the PlayStation started as a CD add-on for the Super Nintendo
Sony announced the SNES PlayStation at CES in 1991, and the next day Nintendo announced it was working with Philips instead. Sony went off and built its own console. A surviving prototype turned up years later and sold at auction in 2020 for around $360k.
