How I got here
- Started with
- Why does bunny hopping make you go faster?
- Ended at
- “half-life 2 accelerated back hopping”
The Trail
- “why does bunny hopping make you faster” (google.com)
- Strafing (video games) (en.wikipedia.org)
- Quake (video game) (en.wikipedia.org)
where strafe-jumping started
- “air strafing explained source engine” (youtube.com)
- “half-life 2 accelerated back hopping” (google.com)
What I came away with
In Quake-derived engines, air acceleration only limits your speed in the direction you're steering toward, not your total speed. Turn the mouse smoothly while strafing in the air and you keep adding velocity at an angle, then jump the instant you land to skip ground friction. Half-Life 2's 'accelerated back hopping' is a related bug where jumping backwards keeps adding speed.
