How I got here
- Started with
- Is it legal to write an emulator?
- Ended at
- “cycle accurate emulation”
The Trail
- “is emulation legal” (google.com)
- Video game console emulator (en.wikipedia.org)
- Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. Connectix Corp. (en.wikipedia.org)
- Bleem! (en.wikipedia.org)
- Yuzu (emulator) (en.wikipedia.org)
shut down in 2024 after settling with Nintendo
- “cycle accurate emulation” (hn.algolia.com)
What I came away with
In the US, writing an emulator itself appears to be legal: Connectix reverse-engineered the PlayStation BIOS for its Virtual Game Station, Sony sued, and the appeals court found it was fair use. Distributing BIOS files, ROMs or decryption keys is a separate question, and that's where most of the legal trouble lands.
