How I got here
- Started with
- “mantis shrimp 16 color receptors”
- Ended at
- “mantis shrimp color vision worse”
The Trail
- “mantis shrimp 16 color receptors” (google.com)
- Mantis shrimp (en.wikipedia.org)
- Color vision (en.wikipedia.org)
- Cavitation (en.wikipedia.org)
the punch is so fast the water boils
- “mantis shrimp color vision worse” (reddit.com)
What I came away with
They have 12 to 16 types of photoreceptors, but experiments found they're actually worse than us at telling similar colors apart. The current theory is they recognize colors directly instead of comparing receptor signals, which is faster but coarser.
