How I got here
- Started with
- Are some people really tetrachromats?
- Ended at
- “human tetrachromacy”
The Trail
- “human tetrachromat real” (google.com)
- Tetrachromacy (en.wikipedia.org)
- Cone cell (en.wikipedia.org)
- Color blindness (en.wikipedia.org)
the same X chromosome genetics behind red-green colorblindness make a fourth cone type possible
- “human tetrachromacy” (reddit.com)
What I came away with
Plenty of women may carry four cone types, but having the cone isn't the same as using it. In the best-known study (Gabriele Jordan's group, 2010) only one woman of those tested could reliably tell apart colors that look identical to everyone else. Functional human tetrachromacy seems real, but rare.
