the Mulsanne Straight got chicanes because cars were hitting 400 km/h
In 1988 a WM Peugeot was clocked at 405 km/h on the Mulsanne. Two chicanes went in for 1990, and nobody has come near 400 there since.

How I got here
- Started with
- Why are there chicanes on the Mulsanne Straight?
- Ended at
- Jacky Ickx
The Trail
- “le mans mulsanne straight top speed record” (google.com)
- Circuit de la Sarthe (en.wikipedia.org)
- WM P88 (en.wikipedia.org)
405 km/h officially. apparently a bit faster, but 405 was better marketing for the Peugeot 405
- 24 Hours of Le Mans (en.wikipedia.org)
- Standing start (en.wikipedia.org)
- Jacky Ickx (en.wikipedia.org)
What I came away with
Le Mans used to start with drivers sprinting across the track to their cars. In 1969 Jacky Ickx walked to his car in protest, took the time to do up his belts, and still won. The running start was dropped after that year.
