What I came away with
What everyone saw live was a converted, lower-quality version of the camera's slow-scan signal. The raw tapes were backups, and the most likely explanation is they were erased and reused in the early 1980s during a data tape shortage. A search team of retirees looked for years in the 2000s and didn't find them.
