What I came away with
Arnold van Gennep coined it in Rites of Passage (1909): rituals have a separation stage, an in-between 'liminal' stage, and a reincorporation stage. Victor Turner later expanded it. The internet's 'liminal spaces' are closer to Marc Augé's non-places, built for passing through and not for being in.
